Fabrications

Fabrications is the refereed journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Australia and New Zealand. Established in 1989, it is devoted to scholarly publication in the field of architectural history. It particularly welcomes papers on the architectural, urban and landscape history of Australia, New Zealand, the South Pacific and South-East Asian regions, while casting its net much further afield. The journal publishes refereed papers, academic essays and book reviews that are both concerned with these regions and papers which take a wider view of international questions or issues.

The politicisation of heritage practice around local tourism economies, national nominations and global designations has diverted architectural scholarship away from the empirical comfort zone and towards the emergent interdisciplinary field of critical heritage studies. We are increasingly compelled to engage with points of social and cultural tension and conflict over heritage sites, landscapes and buildings. This issue of Fabrications explores the transition from stable representations of cultural heritage as apolitical and all encompassing to a more dynamic and complex recognition of its inequities. They surface, in particular, in the relationship between major and minor cultural practices where architecture, heritage and politics intersect. The cover image of a watercolour painting by Kuala Lumpur artist, Victor Chin, for example, celebrates a poetic art practice whereby, through his representations of old urban buildings in Melaka, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, he highlights their heritage value, drawing attention to the everyday environments of ordinary people often overlooked in national heritage listings.
